indianapolis band led by organist bobby watley (ex-lonnie smith group) and driven by his funky jack mcduff-influenced playing. discovered in march 1971, funk inc had sent bob porter a demo tape which languished in a pile of other until the producer finally got around to working his way through the whole batch. the band s tape grabbed him as soon as he heard the first notes and the rest, as they say, is history. a quintet, funk inc s constituent members were leader bobby watley on organ, eugene barr on tenor saxophone, steve weakley on guitar, jimmy munford on drums and cecil hunt on congas. watley, the leader, worked originally as a drummer, with both winston walls and lonnie smith. he switched to organ in 1969 and was heavily influenced by jack mcduff. barr played his first professional gig with little milton and then went on to lead his own band prior to joining funk inc. munford worked with artists of the calibre of etta james, jerry butler and james brown. hunt had been with the coasters as well as playing with local california bands. weakley was one of the (then) new breed of guitarists whose debt owed as much to jimi hendrix as kenny burrell.

an incredible album from lo borges one of the best singer/songwriters on the brazilian scene of the 70s! borges first burst into the spotlight for his work on the club da esquina album by milton nascimento and his work as part of miltons corner club really helped shape the style of the more famous singer. yet borges is almost an equally great talent on his own with a soaring, soulful approach that’s every bit as great as the best nascimento material from the period and recorded in a wonderfully similar spirit! the sound here is completely sublime right from the start music that moves us, even if we can t understand the language of the lyrics like some of the best work by caetano veloso and gilberto gil. there’s maybe a bit more guitar than on some of the milton nascimento work of the period but used in a fuzzy way that slides in nicely with some of the jazzy phrasing of the instrumentation which is delivered with help from key contemporaries who include beto guedes, nelson angelo, toninho horta, and tenorio jr. the songwriting is amazing and titles include cancao postal, voce fica melhor assim, nao foi nada, calibre, faca seu jogo, toda essa agua,pensa voce, como o machando, and aos baroes.

brainwaltzera debuts on film. the anonymous producer, whose work has has already received online approval from legendary british idm auteur aphex twin, offers up an extended ep for the berlin based imprint. in 2015 a soundcloud profile under the name user18081971 - now identified as belonging to richard d. james, commented on curious brainwaltzera upload quilat spring 1 outtake. the move prompted speculation as to who exactly is behind the music. exquisitely produced and executed in such fine fashion so as to decry pure imitation - there’s plenty to theorise here. regardless of their true creator - which will undoubtedly remain a secret for the time being, the compositions on film006 are of similarly high calibre. varied in approach and marrying both electronic & acoustic elements with ease, the six tracks that comprise the record range from yearning ambient segues and dreamy down tempo grooves to otherworldly krautrock and more direct, dance floor fare - but remain bound tight as a cohesive and functional body of work by a glorious, arcane musicality. whether weaving soft electronic tones in and amongst snappy breaks or detuned drum-machine strikes, the artist’s ear for acoustic harmony is perhaps the pervading theme across the six tracks that make up the aecoba ep, marking it out as an excellent addition to the film labels growing catalogue

los charlys orchestra music project created in 2005 by the two venezuelans producers juan laya & jorge montiel. following their past three releases (soulfoundation & disconsolidation & disco royale) the disco band is back with a new ep called disco funk which promises to a bomb for all disco music aficionados and all the people who likes to boogie. among some of the talented members of the charlys orchestra there are artist of the calibre of alison david (ex vocalist of uk producer paul hardcastle), xantone blacq, rotimo soul, noel mckoy, tom nowak, william cumberbache and jose luis pardo from los amigos invisibles.

selected advent deal. - this debut release on new imprint numbercult is sure to make waves, pulling no punches with this weighty production. the series hits off with a anonymous artist (which most likely is not making his debut here, judging on the production skills). the a side kicks off landlines, 11 minutes of driving deepness, an overdriven stabbing subbass and solid percussion give the track monstrous bottom end with the hypnotic lead line almost vanishing in the vastness. this could be descriped as a kind of mid 90s techno... the rawer side of basic channel or fcom. an absolute sexy monster track that keeps pushing forward and remains its funky almost dubby drive. strong! from the b side clonic is a driving mills esque x 103 ish assault, layering discordant acid lines to produce an intense and relentless track, broken only once with soaring beautiful strings. a side is essential! the b side only for the headstrong. a great start for this new label from glasgow releasing limited releases of high calibre deep techno from a dynamic collective of producers. a label grounded on the basics of techno with an open mind to the future. and what a great start. check!!!

when a producer of the calibre of pete heller, with an intricate knowledge and understanding of the history of house music, started experimenting with an old roland 303 in the studio over a dub of a track hed been working on, there was only ever going to one result – something very special indeed! so taking a few days off from studying for his masters degree in digital media, pete heller crafted another stunning timeless club track. when john digweed heard the resulting sabotage he swiftly signed it to his bedrock label and agreed with pete that the track should be remixed by the mighty tom stephan and his london based iranian sidekick kamisshake.
